This is achieved using many of the same techniques employed during Swedish massage but also incorporating various
neuromuscular techniques such as Muscle Energy Technique, Trigger Point Therapy , Soft Tissue Release &
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation all of which are explained below.

Although all treatments are performed within an individual clients pain tolerance this is a deep tissue treatment and some
pain/discomfort may be expected during this treatment and for a day or two afterwards however this is necessary for long
term improvements to occur.

If you are involved in sport/ exercise at whatever level, a sports specific massage can be beneficial at various stages of
participation not only to treat and rehabilitate injury but also:

During training as injury prevention tool- As training loads increase, strains & tears can occur in muscle tissue. If ignored major injuries can develop causing
lengthy lay offs from training and missed competition.

Pre-Event- A brief energising massage designed to prepare muscles for exertion by increasing blood flow, body temperature and improving flexibility of soft
tissues. Best given within an hour of the pre-event warm up.

Post- Event- A slow relaxing massage designed to ease tension and soreness by encouraging the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients to the muscles while
dispersing lactic acid and waste products promoting optimum recovery.

Post travel- It is very common for sports people at all levels to have to travel long distances to compete. Massage can be effectively used to relieve general
feelings of stiffness, muscular aches especially in the neck, shoulders back and swollen feet and ankles.

Regardless of your experience or ability in sport or exercise, sports massage may be a useful addition to your training/pre-competition regime.

OTHER TECHNIQUES USED DURING SPORTS/REMEDIAL MASSAGE...

Trigger point therapy, involves the application of deeper, more focused pressure to myofascial trigger points. These are hyper irritable spots that can form in the
muscles, are painful when pressed, and when active can refer pain and other symptoms to other areas of the body. Latent trigger points may no longer cause pain but
can still cause restricted movement and muscle weakness.

Although all treatments are carried out within each clients pain tolerance, some short lived pain is to be expected during this treatment.

Muscle Energy Technique (or MET) is based on the principle of reciprocal inhibition,i.e. that a muscle on one side of a joint will always relax to accommodate the
contraction of a muscle on the opposite side of that joint. For example when the biceps on the front of the upper arm contract, the triceps on the back of the upper
arm relax. MET can be applied safely to any joint of the body to lengthen shortened or tight muscles, to improve weakened ligament and muscle strength, and to
improve range of motion and is used by many athletes as a preventative measure to guard against injury.

Soft Tissue Release (or STR) is an effective technique used to relieve muscle pain and tension while preventing further damage. Muscles, particularly after injury, are
often not uniformly tight but contain localised areas of tension or adhesions restricting only a few fibres. When performing regular stretches, we may not necessarily be
stretching the tight part of the muscle, but the part that is already more pliable. STR helps localise a stretch to those adhered fibres by the application of pressure to
the muscle while it is being moved either passively (by the therapist) or actively (by the client).

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (or PNF) is an advanced type of flexibility therapy which is very effective in improving flexibility, strength and range of
motion in a damaged or stiff muscle. The client performs a series of exercises involving contraction of the muscle against resistance provided by the therapist followed
by periods of relaxation. If carried out regularly long term improvements can be achieved.
Sports Massage involves the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of the soft tissues of
the body releasing any build up of tension and lactic acid in the muscles while encouraging the
increased flow of blood, oxygen and essential nutrients effectively promoting muscle repair.
                                                                                                    ABOUT SPORTS MASSAGE...
At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta massage was offered as a core medical service for the first time. Now
massage is commonly used by many people as a sporting aid, to relax, to aid in injury rehabilitation and by
businesses and organizations such as the U.S. Department of Justice, Boeing and Reebok.

There are many types of massage therapy; all of which involve manipulating the muscles and
other soft tissues of the body. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin,
joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal
system.
There are few serious risks to be considered providing appropriate precautions are followed and treatment is given by an appropriately trained and qualified therapist.
